Signs your panel needs attention
Most South Bay homes were built for a different era of electricity use. Many Torrance, Redondo and Gardena homes date from the 1950s and '60s, when a home didn't run central air, an induction range, a hot tub and an electric car at the same time. If any of these sound familiar, have your panel looked at:
- Breakers that trip oftenEspecially when the AC, microwave or dryer turns on.
- A fuse boxScrew-in fuses instead of breakers usually mean the system is decades old.
- Zinsco or Federal PacificThese brands are widely known for breakers that can fail to trip.
- Warm, buzzing or scorchedHeat, buzzing or burn marks at the panel need a look right away.
- Flickering or dimming lightsLights that dip when big appliances start can point to an overloaded or loose connection.
- Planning something bigAn EV charger, heat pump, ADU, spa or kitchen remodel often needs more capacity.
What we do
- Main panel upgrades. Replacing an old or undersized panel, commonly moving from 100 amps to 200 amps, so your home has room for what you run today and what you'll add next.
- Panel replacements. Swapping out fuse boxes and problem panels like Zinsco and Federal Pacific for a modern breaker panel.
- Sub-panels. Extra circuits for a garage, workshop, ADU or addition.
- Whole-home and partial rewiring. Replacing old, ungrounded or damaged wiring, and adding grounded outlets where you need them.
- Surge protection. Whole-home surge protection installed at the panel to help protect electronics and appliances.
How a panel upgrade works
We start by looking at your current panel and what you run, and do a load calculation so the new panel is sized right. You get a clear quote before any work starts.
A main panel or service upgrade requires a permit and city inspection, and the power has to be shut off and reconnected by Southern California Edison. Most of the work happens in a single day, and we'll tell you up front how long your power will be off.
Questions
Panel upgrade questions
Do I need a 200 amp panel?
Not always. If you're adding an EV charger, central AC or heat pump, an ADU, or doing a big remodel, a 100 amp service is often not enough. We do a load calculation based on what you actually run and plan to add, then recommend the right size, whether that's an upgrade or a smarter use of the panel you have.
Are Zinsco and Federal Pacific panels dangerous?
Both brands are widely known in the electrical trade for breakers that can fail to trip during an overload or short, which is exactly when a breaker needs to work. If you have one, we recommend having it inspected and, in most cases, replaced.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
The installation itself usually takes about a day. Because a service upgrade needs a permit, an inspection and a disconnect and reconnect by Southern California Edison, the whole process takes longer from start to finish. We'll give you a realistic timeline with your quote.
Will my power be off?
Yes, for part of the day while the panel is swapped. We'll tell you ahead of time when and for how long so you can plan around it.
Does my house need rewiring?
Homes with two-prong outlets, cloth-covered wiring, aluminum branch wiring, or lots of extension cords and adapters are worth checking. We can inspect your wiring and tell you whether it needs a full rewire, a partial update, or just a few new circuits.
